Blake Wheeler helped off ice in ugly Rangers injury scene

Rangers forward Blake Wheeler left Thursday night’s game halfway through the first period against the Canadiens with an apparent leg injury in a scary moment.
Wheeler crawled on the ice after his leg bent awkwardly under him after taking a hit from Jayden Struble along the boards behind the Rangers’ net.
He attempted to get up before he collapsed in agony as a Rangers trainer came racing onto the ice to help the forward.

Wheeler was eventually helped up by Chris Kreider, and he and the trainer took him off the ice, where he was put on a stretcher.
The Rangers ruled him out for the rest of the game with a lower-body injury before the team won 7-4.
“We’ll evaluate it and address it [Friday] but that was tough for Blake,” head coach Peter Laviolette said after the game. “He’s a veteran player who came here for a reason and when you see something like that happen, it’s tough.”
Wheeler has appeared in 54 games in his first season in New York, recording 21 points.
